Developing the Correct Mindset
for Teaching Others
by Adrian McMaster
Teaching others is a very worthwhile pursuit because it allows you to feel a sense of accomplishment and it helps others to learn new knowledge or skills. Teaching can be difficult because of the wide variety of learning styles and the presence of learning disabilities in some students. The key is to not get frustrated by all these variations, but to develop a mindset for teaching that will help you to be an effective teacher, deal well with the stress of teaching, and allow you to be a success in your teaching endeavors.
The first thing you need to do to develop the correct mindset to teach is understand that you will be working with people of all abilities and backgrounds. You can’t expect that every student will come from the same educational background, socioeconomic group, or culture. If you develop an open mind and remember that everyone is of worth, you will have a better time teaching and may be more effective than someone who is closed minded and expects that everyone have the same learning abilities. You should also develop a mindset that allows you to deal effectively with diversity. New cultures and languages may be introduced to you. Instead of becoming frustrated, treat this as an opportunity to learn more about the world around you and how other people live.
If you are a teacher, you will be imparting knowledge on your students, but you will also have to keep your knowledge and skills current. If you want to develop the correct mindset for teaching, you will need to make a commitment to continuous learning. New information is discovered every day, so if you want to be an effective teacher, you will need to make this commitment so that you can teach others the most current information. This is most important in the areas of science and technology, where new things are being discovered and learned each and every day. You can commit yourself to continuous learning by being willing to read books and newspapers in your field, take continuing education classes, and attend seminars or workshops related to the topics you teach.
Teaching also requires that you have good organizational skills, so it is important for you to commit yourself to being organized as a teacher. If you want to effectively teach every day, you’ll need to have organized and well thought out lesson plans that you can follow in order to present a solid lesson in the classroom. You need to have these lesson plans done in advance and you will also need to have the materials listed in the lesson plan on the days you plan to use them. A lesson plan that is not executed does not serve a purpose when you are a teacher. If you plan to incorporate experiential learning into your classroom, you will need to organize all of your classroom materials and keep them clean and neat so everyone can have a chance to use them. Being organized will help you stay positive and it will also help the classroom run more smoothly.
Teaching is difficult because it requires that you make an effort to understand students and help them to solve their learning problems. One way you can develop the correct mindset for teaching is to make a commitment to your students. If you notice a struggling student, make it a point to talk with him or her and find out what is going on. Some students can be distracted by personal problems while others have learning disabilities that should be addressed within the educational system. If you make a commitment to your students and develop a positive attitude, you’ll be on your way to success as a teacher.
