Developing the Correct Mindset for Discipline

by Adrian McMaster

Developing discipline in your life is quite an undertaking. Being able to discipline yourself to achieve goals or complete a task is difficult because it takes a healthy dose of willpower and the ability to change your habits into new habits that have a more positive affect on the level of discipline in your life. Developing this type of discipline also requires that you develop a mindset that is conducive to being a disciplined individual. If you live a cluttered or disorganized life, this can affect your level of discipline. This can make it necessary for you to have to make changes that will reduce this mental and physical clutter and make it less difficult for you to discipline yourself and achieve whatever it is that you set out to achieve.

The first thing you need to do to develop a mindset that will help you discipline yourself is decide what areas of your life need more discipline. You may be disciplined in your career or as a parent, but perhaps you are not disciplined enough to follow a regular exercise plan or a nutritious diet. Other people may lack discipline in all areas of their lives and may need to do a total overhaul of the way they set goals and discipline themselves to achieve these goals. Once you decide what you need discipline to accomplish, you can make a note of these things for future reference and motivation.

Once you have recorded your ideas for adding discipline to your life, you can begin to focus on getting rid of the negative thoughts and ideas that have blocked you from achieving self-discipline in the past. When you focus on negative events that happened in the past, you are using energy that could be better spent on thinking positively about what can happen in the future. Focusing on the positive instead of the negative can be difficult because you may have grown accustomed to focusing on the past instead of the future. In order to change these habits, you may want to work with a professional coach or therapist. If you want to work on these habits alone, you can do so with the help of books dedicated to focusing on positive aspects of your life and spending less time focusing on the negative events of the past.

If you are able to move your focus from the past to the present and future, you can then concentrate on developing ways to introduce discipline to your life. Since you have determined where you need discipline, it is now time to start adding discipline to those areas of your life. If you are trying to discipline yourself to follow an exercise routine, there are many tools you can use to remind you of your goals and motivate you to stick to them. You can use written reminders, set an alarm to go off each time you need to exercise, leave yourself messages with reminders to exercise each day, or enlist the help of coworkers, family members, or friends to help you remember what you need to do. Once you have implemented these motivational tools into your life, you may find that introducing discipline becomes easier over time.

Adding discipline to your life is not an easy task to accomplish because of the new mindset that needs to be adopted at the beginning of your journey to success. However, adding this discipline to your life can truly enrich it by giving you a way to achieve everything that you have set out to achieve. This is truly a reward for your time, energy, and hard work.
