The method that you choose will depend on how bad your smoking habit is, how well you can tolerate drug therapy, and what your doctor thinks the best method for treatment is. Once you have selected one of these methods to help you quit smoking, you’ll need to commit yourself to taking your tablets every day, using your nicotine patches appropriately, or attending all of your behavior modification sessions. Once you have settled on a course to reaching your goal, you’ll need to have a plan in place for what to do if the temptation to have a cigarette becomes overwhelming. If you have a support system in place, you’ll want to include them in your life and let them know when you are having a hard time staying on track. This can be very helpful, especially if you have some former smokers in your support group, because they can give you tips from their experiences with quitting smoking. You can also release stress by playing a sport or doing a hobby that keeps your hands occupied. If your hands are busy, you won’t be able to light up and veer off of the path to reaching your goal.
