Developing the Correct Mindset for
Public Speaking

by Adrian McMaster

Public speaking is one of the greatest fears of people all over the world, ranked high on the list with snakes and spiders. Understanding why public speaking causes so much fear is one important way to develop your public speaking skills and deliver effective speeches and presentations. Once you have identified why you fear public speaking, you can move toward developing the mindset needed for overcoming your fears and learning to be an effective speaker. Developing this mindset takes commitment, constant learning, and the effort needed to transform your work into a successful public speaking engagement, but the rewards can be enormous. Learning how to develop this mindset can be difficult, but once you master it, you can become a more confident and polished speaker for
any occasion.

Understanding why you fear public speaking can be a difficult task because it forces you to look into the past and discover what caused you to develop your fear. Maybe you stumbled during a school play or made a mistake during a speech during a pageant when you were younger. Maybe you are unable to use the technology that often accompanies public speakers. Whatever the reason, understanding why you fear public speaking is a process that will require you to commit your time and resources to gaining knowledge of why your fear exists. Once you determine the cause of your fear of public speaking, you can more effectively develop a mindset that will allow you to speak in public more frequently.

The next step to developing the correct mindset for public speaking is to identify ways in which you can improve your public speaking skills. This is a highly reflective process and involves a great deal of commitment on your part. Identifying your public speaking weaknesses will help you to develop the mindset necessary to correct these weaknesses and become a better public speaker. In order to identify your weaknesses, you may want to give a short speech to an observer or videotape yourself giving a speech. The observer’s feedback or the video tape of your speech can give you clues as to how you can improve your public speaking skills. Do you fidget too much? Do you speak too quietly? Are you a fast talker? All of these traits can distract people from your message and reduce your credibility as a speaker.

The correct mindset for public speaking also makes it necessary to commit yourself to improving the weaknesses that you identify. It isn’t helpful to identify your weaknesses and then do nothing to improve them in some way. If you find out that you speak too quickly, practice slowing down your rate of speech. If you fidget during your speeches, practice some exercises at home that help you to remain relaxed and natural looking as you deliver your message. If you speak too quietly, work with another person to develop a speaking volume that is neither too loud nor too quiet for your audience.

You need to understand that public speaking is not just about you as the speaker. There is an audience involved and you need to be able to consider their needs. While developing your public speaking mindset, you need to come up with ways to consider your audience while you are preparing for your speech or presentation. Ask yourself what kinds of people make up the audience. What do they want to get out of your message? Why have you been selected to speak to the group? If you develop clear objectives for your speech, you will be better able to meet the expectations of your audience, which makes you a better public speaker. Using all of these tools for developing the correct mindset for public speaking can be difficult, but it will be well worth it when you can speak in public in a confident and knowledgeable manner.
