Developing the Correct Mindset for Playing a Sport

by Adrian McMaster

Playing a sport can be a rewarding competitive and recreational activity. You can meet new people, get a great deal of healthy exercise, and learn about working together to reach a common goal. Playing a sport also requires that you develop a specific mindset that will motivate you to perform your best, allow you to resolve any competitive issues in a dignified manner, and help you to have fun at the same time. Learning how to develop this mindset takes hard work, but if you commit yourself to the new mindset, you’ll be more motivated and able to take more away from the sports you play.

The first step in developing your mindset is choosing a sport to play. Some sports are very physical while others require more of a mental concentration. When you are deciding which sport you want to play, you can make a list of all the sports you enjoy watching, the kind of activities you enjoy, and the sports you have an interest in. Once you have compiled this list, think about what you’ll need for each sport. Do you have any physical limitations that make playing certain sports a bad idea? Are you able to commit your time and energy to the practice schedule required by another sport? Once you have listed your interests and then examined them realistically, you’ll be able to narrow your choices down to just a few. Try talking with someone who plays each sport to find out which one you’re most interested in and make a decision so you can get started.

Once you’ve selected a sport, you will need to commit yourself to learning whatever you can about how the sport is played, what the rules of the sport are, and how many other people can be involved in one game or match. You might want to consider signing up for a class at a local fitness club or observing the game you have selected being played before you get out there and start playing. You can also use books and instructional videos to look at the skills you will need to learn and practice demonstrating those skills. One of the best ways to learn is to get in a game and learn what you need to do during a competition. If you can learn using one of these methods, you’ll be better able to keep a positive mindset when you first start to play on a regular basis.

Once you’ve learned the basics of playing your sport, you can start playing with others. Your new mindset should include a willingness to practice good sportsmanship when you play with other people. If you are not sure what good sportsmanship is, think about how you would like to be treated during a game. Chances are that you’ll want people to treat you with respect and refrain from using derogatory or foul language. You should keep this in mind as you begin playing on a regular basis. If you find yourself becoming frustrated with referees or other players, make a commitment to good sportsmanship and release your frustration in other ways besides being rude. You might want to try relaxation techniques or you can use your extra energy and channel it into improving your performance.

Learning to play a new sport is not easy, but it is an endeavor worthy of your time and energy. If you are willing to develop a positive mindset, learn from your experience, and maintain a good level of sportsmanship, you’ll be able to enrich your life and participate in your new sport for many years to come.
