Developing the Correct Mindset
for Overcoming Fear
by Adrian McMaster
People fear many things including insects, snakes, public speaking, taking a chance on a business, investing in the stock market, and developing close personal relationships. While some fear can be healthy because it prevents you from making hasty and uninformed decisions, too much fear can hamper your efforts to accomplish your goals and live your dreams. If you want to overcome your fears, you need to develop a mindset that will help you to identify your fears, work towards reducing or eliminating them, and move on with your life. Developing this mindset is not an easy task, but it can be very rewarding when you are able to achieve things that you could never accomplish before due to your fears.
The first step to developing the mindset needing to overcome your fears is to actually identify the things that you fear. You cannot develop the proper mindset without understanding what you fear and how it impacts your life. Identifying your fears can be an intense process because it forces you to review the past and see what you have been afraid of. Recording your fears on a sheet of paper or in a notebook can help you to overcome them because you are constantly reminded of how those fears have impacted your life. Some of the fears you may write down include fear of failure, fear of starting a business, fear of public speaking, or fear of rejection by hers. Once you identify these fears, you can move on to the next part of developing the mindset needed to overcome them.
Once you have identified your fears, you need to understand how they developed. This can be very intense and emotional because many fears develop as a result of embarrassing or frightening incidents during childhood. If you’re afraid of public speaking, it may be due to your role in a school play when you were a child. If you are afraid of rejection by others, it may be because you felt rejected by your parents or your peers as a child. Once you understand what your fears stem from, you will be better prepared to develop the mindset needed to overcome them to achieve your goals.
Once you have identified your fears and their underlying sources, you can really get down to the business of overcoming them. The techniques you use to overcome your fears will depend on the types of fears you have and the resources you have available. If you can afford to hire a consultant or coach to help you overcome your fears, it can benefit you to do so because it gives you an experienced and objective person to work with. Personal coaches and consultants are not weighed down by the personal issues you have experienced in developing your fears, so they can provide you with suggestions and information that you may not have thought of before. If you cannot afford to hire a professional, you can still work on your own to overcome your fears. You can use a combination of visualization techniques, meditation, relaxation, and other practical methods to face your fears and develop ways to work around them in your everyday life.
Working to overcome your fears can be a very personal and intense process. However, if you are willing to commit your time, effort, and resources to overcoming these fears, you can realize many benefits. The greatest benefit of all will be your newfound ability to face your faces and perform tasks you never thought you could do. Doing this can lead to your ability to reach your goals and live your dreams every single day.
