Developing the Correct Mindset
for Living with a Disability

by Adrian McMaster

Living with a disability is a difficult prospect for any individual. People can be born with disabilities or acquire them because of automobile accidents, sports injuries, and other tragic incidents. Being disabled requires people to develop a new mindset to keep them from developing depression or believing that they cannot accomplish anything. If you are disabled and want to develop this new mindset, you can work on changing your mindset from a negative attitude to a positive attitude. Making this change can be difficult because it will force you to commit yourself to a period of self awareness and discovery. If you are able to make it through this period and remain committed to developing your new mindset, you will be able to succeed in a positive way.

If you were born with a disability, you may have become used to physical limitations. However, having a disability is something that will remain with you for life, so it may become frustrating or discouraging at times even if you have dealt with the disability for many years. One key to developing a good mindset for living with a disability is to remember that a disability may limit your physical activities, but does not have to limit your achievement in other areas. Developing your positive mindset will involve developing goals for yourself, committing yourself to doing activities that will prepare you to achieve your goals, and sticking with these activities even if you become discouraged or frustrated. With hard work and a lot of perseverance, you will be able to prepare yourself for success in spite of your disability.

If you developed a disability due to an injury or accident later in life, it may be more difficult for you to cope with your disability than it is for someone who has had a lifelong disability. You may have gotten used to being able to perform everyday activities that you can no longer manage without assistance. You may have had to adjust how you perform your daily activities to account for your new disability. This can be very discouraging and frustrating, but developing the correct mindset for living with a disability will help you to cope with these changes in your life. Instead of dwelling on what you can’t do, make it a priority to focus on what you can do or what you can change to make your life better. If physical therapy would be helpful for your condition, focus on doing the therapy that your physician recommends. If you have to cope with an injury you don’t know very much about, commit yourself to learning more about the injury. You can then act as an advocate for others with the same impairment or teach others about how to cope with this type of disability.

Whether your injury occurred at birth or after you had gotten used to a certain way of life, there may be times when it is difficult for you to maintain your positive mindset. If you come across these discouraging times, it would be a good idea for you to have a plan for what to do to get back on track. This may mean having a book you read to stay positive, planning to talk with someone you trust, working with a personal development coach to work through your situation, or doing relaxation and meditation techniques. If you have a plan in place for coping with these discouraging situations, you will be more likely to overcome them and move on with your life. Keeping this positive mindset won’t always be easy, but it can truly improve your life.
