Developing the Correct Mindset
for Lifelong Learning

by Adrian McMaster

The world around us is changing every day, so it is important for us to develop a commitment to lifelong learning. Lifelong learning means that you are committing yourself to learning about the world around you as you age. While most students are young people, just because school ends does not mean that learning has to end. There are many opportunities for continuous learning and personal development available. In order to take advantage of these opportunities, you will need to develop a positive mindset and a good attitude. Developing the correct mindset for lifelong learning will help you to reach your goals and become a well-rounded person.

The first key to developing the correct mindset for lifelong learning is to make a commitment to learn anything you can at every opportunity. Just because you are not participating in a formal course of education does not mean that you cannot learn. In fact, learning outside of the classroom can be very effective because it allows you to observe the world around you and make your own conclusions. The world presents us with many opportunities for lifelong learning, so once you make this commitment, you can set off on your journey of learning and exploration.

Reading is a great way to pursue a life of learning. New books come out every day on a wide variety of topics from business to health care. If you are committed to lifelong learning, you should develop the habit of being an avid reader. You don’t need to read large volumes or books that are difficult to understand, just make it a priority to read something about a topic you’re interested in. You could read about gardening, space exploration, television production, literature, or any other topic that you’d like to know more about. If the cost of buying books is prohibitive to you, check out your local library so you can borrow books for free and continually develop your body of knowledge.

Magazines and newspapers are also a great source of information for someone who is committed to lifelong learning. Newspapers can give you a fresh outlook on local and world events and magazines can contain stories about business, economics, finance, politics, and other areas that you may be interested in. The key to reading magazines and newspapers for lifelong learning is to pick the right publications. Some magazines are about fashion and beauty and some newspapers are tabloids in disguise. If you make your selection wisely, you’ll be able to read well-written stories about interesting people and events.

Taking continuing education or personal development classes is a great way to solidify your commitment to continuous learning. No matter what age you are, there are classes on topics that interest you and are taught by experienced teachers in that discipline. If you’re interested in academics, you can pursue classes in literature, mathematics, history, and other areas. If you are interested in learning practical skills, you can try classes on business plan writing, starting a small business, cooking, sewing, and other skills. If you take one of these classes, commit yourself to regular attendance and make an effort to do all of the assigned reading. The teacher’s aim is to get you to develop skills or knowledge by taking the class, so this commitment will help you to get more out of the class you signed up for.

Continuous learning is a very worthwhile pursuit because it allows you to keep abreast of new world developments and be able to converse easily with people from all walks of life. Committing yourself to this pursuit will pay off when you have a new body of knowledge or a new set of skills to use to enrich your life.
