Developing the Correct Mindset
for Learning a New Language

by Adrian McMaster

Learning is a new language is a great undertaking and something that can enrich your life in ways you never thought possible. Learning a new language is more difficult for adults than for children, but with a lot of practice time and a commitment to learning, you’ll be able to learn enough of the language to have simple conversations and make yourself understood when you’re interacting with people who speak the same language. One of the most important components of being able to learn a new language is having a positive mindset. If you have a negative attitude and do not believe that you can truly learn the language you want to learn, you reduce your motivation and increase your chances of not being able to learn the language.

If you want to learn a new language, you’ll need to figure out which language you want to learn before you can truly develop your new mindset. Deciding which language to learn can be one of the most fun parts of your experience. When you’re selecting a language, consider why you want to learn a new language. Are you preparing for travel? Do you have family members in another country? Are you preparing for a new career? Your needs and wishes will help you to pick a language that will be helpful to you in achieving your goals. If you are preparing for travel, find out what language is spoken in the country you are traveling to. If your family members live in another country, you can make an effort to learn their native language. Your job might require that you learn a language to help you do business with international clients and vendors. Once you have selected a language to learn, you can start developing a positive mindset to help you learn the language.

When you’re developing your new mindset, you’ll need to commit yourself to having a positive attitude. A positive attitude means being willing to put in the time and effort to achieve your goal of a new language. If you are negative and talk negatively about your efforts, you will lose motivation. Being positive helps to keep you motivated and can also help you to reach your goal more quickly. If you need help being positive, remember the list of reasons you want to learn the language and think about how much learning a new language will help you to enrich your life.

Once you’ve committed yourself to having a positive attitude, you must also make a commitment to put forth the effort necessary to learn a new language. This means dedicating your time and energy to attending classes, working with language tapes, practicing pronunciation, and reading books in and about the language you are trying to learn. If you’re willing to spend your valuable time and money on learning, chances are that you will stick with your efforts and persevere through any difficult steps in the learning process. Learning a new language can be difficult due to the many dialects spoken, the new way of pronouncing letter combinations, and the speed at which many programs go through the language learning lessons. However, learning a language is also a worthwhile pursuit because it can help you to develop yourself personally, learn about new cultures, and learn a valuable skill that can be used for business or personal reasons. If you commit yourself to having a positive mindset and a good attitude about learning a new language, you’ll be able to learn more than you ever thought. Then you can use your new learning to take you to new heights of success.
