Developing the Correct Mindset to Understand God

by Adrian McMaster

Understanding God is a very personal journey that will take you through many days of self-discovery, encourage you to seek out knowledge, and motivate you to find out what you believe personally instead of following what is popular to believe. This intense process can be difficult because it requires you to make a commitment to the journey and also makes you think in ways that you may not have been able to think before. This whole process requires that you develop a mindset that allows you to be open minded and willing to learn all you can before you make a decision as to what you believe. Developing this mindset can be difficult, but it is well worth it in the end if you can come to an understanding of what you believe and how it can be applied to your life.

The first part of developing the correct mindset needed to understand God is committing yourself to intense self-study and learning about the principles of whatever faith you are interested in practicing. Because the concept of God is one that can be confusing or seem to be unrealistic, there are many classes and books available that aim to teach about these concepts and help people come to their own conclusions about what to believe. If you are willing to commit your time and energy to reading these books, enrolling in these courses, or observing people of other faiths, you will find that you can gain a better understanding of each faith or religion that you research. If you are not willing to commit yourself to this self-study, chances are that you will not be able to develop such a broad understanding.

Developing the correct mindset to understand God will also require you to commit yourself to being an open minded individual. Because some of the concepts surrounding God and religion are intangible and cannot be seen or completely understood, it is easy for people to be skeptical and refuse to try to understand these concepts. If you commit yourself to being open minded, this means that you are opening yourself for the understanding of new concepts and that you have a willingness to take a closer look at some concepts that may not make sense to you. Being open minded in the pursuit of your understanding will make it easier for you to develop your beliefs and apply them to your life.

Because the ideas you read about may be difficult to understand, you must also make a commitment to researching these ideas beyond your original period of discovery. While it is important to conduct some initial research and develop a list of topics you want to discuss or research further, this research will serve no purpose if you do not make a commitment to follow up on any concepts you do not understand or ideas that do not make sense to you. Doing preliminary research should not be the only time and effort you put into developing your understanding of God. Instead, this preliminary research should be a guide to the topics you want to discuss with others and learn more about. If you are able to develop a list of ideas and concepts for further research, you will be more likely to continue your pursuit of understanding.

Understanding God is difficult for even the most educated and experienced person. If you want to develop this type of understanding, it will take a lot of effort and commitment, but you can move closer to understanding God and making your life more well rounded and filled with knowledge.
