Developing the Correct Mindset
to Learn from Defeat and Become a Winner
by Adrian McMaster
If you have experienced defeat in some area of your life, you may become frustrated, discouraged, or upset and want to shy away from that area of your life due to a fear of failure. This is one of the worst things you can do after you have experienced defeat. Just like horseback riders need to get back on the horse after they have fallen, you need to use your defeat as a learning experience and continue participating in whatever you enjoy without fear. If you don’t think you’re able to do this, you need to develop a new mindset that will allow you to take your defeat and turn it into a motivational tool for future success. Developing this new mindset is not an easy task, but you can make the process a little less difficult by being committed and motivated to change your life.
The first thing you need to change to develop your new mindset is how you feel about your defeat. Whether you lost a sporting contest or became embarrassed at a public event, everyone has experienced defeat at some point in their lives. The difference between winners and those who continue being defeated is their attitudes. Those who continue to feel defeated are those who dwell on the past and focus on the negative events that have occurred. Those who go on to become winners following defeat are the people who have the ability to remove their focus from the negative events of the past and focus on what positive things can happen in the future. If you are able to change your way of thinking and focus on the positive, this can be a great first step in developing a new mindset that will help you to learn from defeat and become a winner.
Once you have shifted your focus from the negative to the positive, you can continue to develop your new mindset. Your new focus may make it necessary for you to develop an understanding of what you would like to accomplish in the face of your defeat. If you’d like to run the same race or perform the same type of task that you were once defeated at, you’ll need to prepare for those events. If you decide that you want to tackle something new, you’ll need to make plans to prepare for those new events. Your preparation may involve physical training, educating yourself on a new topic, attending classes, or doing any number of other preparation techniques. Your willingness to prepare for your new goals will help you to understand how motivated you are to achieve them and may alert you to changes that need to be made in your plan.
As you prepare for becoming a winner in spite of your previous defeat, you will have to examine how you are progressing and commit yourself to making any changes to your plan for achievement. If your original plan for preparation does not seem to be working, be willing to make changes to the plan. Even if you write your plan for achievement down on a piece of paper, that doesn’t mean that you can’t change it midway through the process of becoming a winner. In fact, having a willingness to adjust your plan shows that you have your eye on your ultimate goal and are committed to doing whatever you need to do to make it happen. Learning from defeat, moving past defeat, and working toward new goals can be a challenging process. However, once you’ve changed your focus and achieved your goals, you’ll be glad that you made the commitment to change your own life.
