Developing the Correct Mindset
for Working with a Charity
by Adrian McMaster
Working with a charity can be a worthwhile endeavor that enriches your life and makes you feel lucky for all the blessings you have been granted. The problem with working with a charity is that the policies and procedures are different for every organization so you always need to be willing to learn how your particular charity can use your help and support. Developing the proper mindset is also important for working with any charity because it will help you to perform your work with a good attitude and may help you take away more from volunteering than you put into it.
Your first order of business at developing the correct mindset for working with a charity is to choose the charity you want to work with. Choosing a charity will depend largely on your interests and the level of time you can commit to volunteering. There is a charity for almost every type of interest including sports, technology, arts, education, science, literacy, and business management. You will need to assess your skills and experience in these areas and select a charity that can put your skills to use. You will also need to select a charity that will work around your schedule and accommodate any special needs that you might have.
Another way to develop a positive mindset for working with a charity is to keep an open mind about the charity and the people you will be working with. Since charities often serve underprivileged citizens, you may be exposed to some aspects of life that you have never considered. It is important not to judge the people you are working with just because of their social class or other arbitrary characteristics. You’ll be able to get more out of volunteering if you keep an open mind and introduce yourself to all the people you meet along the way. One of these new people might become a great friend.
Some people that work with charities are offended when they are assigned simple tasks such as stuffing envelopes or doing errands for the charity. However, having a positive mindset will help you to realize that you have been assigned to the tasks that need to be done the most. Balancing a charity’s budget and organizing large events are not the only ways to contribute to the charity you select. Stuffing envelopes is a very necessary volunteer task, as this task is usually how fundraising mailers and brochures about the organization make their way to the homes of prospective donors. If you make a commitment to serve cheerfully, you can fit in with just about any charity.
Your positive mindset should also include a willingness to do more than you are assigned to do when working with a charity. Most charities are understaffed and would love to have a volunteer who takes initiative and volunteers to do more than the minimum. If you see that another volunteer is struggling to complete a task, offer to help get the task done on time. Ask your supervisor what you can do to make her job easier. Chances are, your supervisor will be able to find several tasks that you can do to reduce the workload and make things run more smoothly. If your positive mindset includes a willingness to take the initiative to do more than you’re asked to do, volunteering can be a great opportunity for you to learn new skills and grow as a person.
Volunteering is a very important commitment that should not be taken lightly. If you do decide to volunteer, make a commitment to doing the best job that you can. This commitment will help you to achieve personal satisfaction and truly give back to your community.
